"My what?" The boy spoke without moving, one eye closed and the other set firmly against the scope. His hands were perfectly steady, cradling his rifle like an only child. One finger rested lightly on the trigger, tapping with the lightest of touches.
The older man chanced a quick peek over the edge of the rooftop to the courtyard below. "Hrm. Still there. Your mantra! You don't have one?"
The boy said nothing, which the man took for a no.
"See, when I first signed up... fifty years back now, or more... they made us each find our own mantra. You'd say it to yourself before each shot until you calmed. Repeat, repeat. Breathe out. Your body moves with your lungs. Breathe out as you squeeze. Picked a target yet?"
"Yeah. Blue shirt, funny eyes. Right side."
"Orright. Adjust for wind. Breathe out. Say your mantra."
"I don't have a mantra."
"Find one."
The boy grinned, his finger tightening against the trigger. The rifle felt like an extension of his arms, his eyes. "I've found one," he said. "Fuck the angels."
