Corpus Island
From NexusWiki
Corpus Island is the larger of two islands to the North East of Northcamp Island. It is uninhabited, undeveloped, and said to be haunted.
The bulk of Corpus Island is comprised of Forest and the Ruins of an old Spanish fort and watchpost built atop the central hill of the island.
The island is prone to assault by hurricanes.
[edit] History
After the Spanish routed the pirate kings in 1742, they established a small look-out post on the island to watch for enemy ships approaching from the East. Over time, this small observatory grew into a larger, defensive structure - Atalaya Del Este - or "The East Watchtower".
Atalaya Del Este served an important role in keeping the harbors of the islands secure, and was called upon for many years to protect the Spanish treasure fleet. For the most part, the heavy guns on the island were sufficient to keep pirates and enemy fleets at bay; however, in 1810, a group of three British warships attempted to enter the harbor, thus provoking the Battle of Corpus Island, wherein the fort was attacked directly, both by cannonfire from sea and ground troops that had landed on the island (they came over in rowboats from Thunder Island).
The Spanish kept up Atalaya Del Este until around 1820 or so, when the declining fortunes of the Spanish Empire meant that fewer and fewer resources were being spent securing "low value" territories. The watchtower and surrounding fort was officially closed in 1828, seven years before the archipelago was sold to the St. Germaine Family.
Since then, one hundred and seventy-five years of constant exposure to the harsh weather of the area has torn Atalaya Del Este down to rubble.
[edit] Traveler's Tips
While not contested as strategic grounds, the land itself of Corpus Island is heavily fought for via magical infusion struggles. Strangers seeking to hide here may find themselves on the receiving end of a rather unfriendly reminder to stay away.
