Damage

There are several types of damage that can be inflicted by weapons or spells. Damage type is important, as certain armors protect only against certain types of damage (or provide better protection to some types than others).

For example, a suit of Light Body Armor may grant 2 points of protection (Soak) versus Slashing and Ballistic types, 4 points of protection verus Piercing, and no protection versus other types.

The damage types are:

  • Acid - This is a rare type of damage and is dealt mainly by a few rare spells and Wyrm Master skills.
  • Ballistic - Damage dealt by all firearms.
  • Bludgeon - This is damage done by weapons that smash, such as fists, feet (kicks), and iron pipes.
  • Cold - Damage dealt by cold sources. This is mostly magical in nature, dealt by spells.
  • Death - This is a special type of damage and is exclusively magical in nature. The Lich's Death Touch ability deals Death damage. Liches and Revenants are immune to Death damage.
  • Electrical - Damage dealt by electrical sources. This is mostly magical in nature, dealt by spells.
  • Fire - Damage dealt by heat sources. This is mostly magical in nature, dealt by spells.
  • Holy - This is damage dealt by weapons forged in Paradise. It is also the dealt as special damage by certain angelic attacks, such as Lesser and Greater Smite.
  • Magical - This type of damage is dealt almost entirely by special spells.
  • Nexal (formerly Untyped) - This is a special type of damage. Few attacks produce it and few things protect against it. It is primarily seen from charged attacks by unaligned combat classes.
  • Piercing - Damage dealt by arrows and some hand-held weapons (knives and axes). This is similar to ballistic damage.
  • Slashing - This is damage dealt by slashing weapons, mainly swords and some knives.
  • Unholy - This damage is dealt by weapons of Stygian origin, as well as some innate attacks possessed by demons, such as Blood Claws. Advocates are immune to Unholy damage.

Special:

  • Unsoakable - This type of damage is extremely special - it cannot be soaked by anything in the game. Planar damage, the Defiler's Poison, the damage recieved from using Sorcerer's Might are some examples of this type of damage. Note: Planar damage can be negated by a Potion of Planar Protection or the Planar Protection skill. Weapons cannot be enchanted to deal this type of damage.
