Door

Doors on buildings are the primary means of preventing other characters from entering a building.

Doors may be locked (from the inside) or padlocked from the outside. If a character is inside, he or she may unlock the door (but not a padlock, which is on the outside). If a door is padlocked, the padlock cannot be removed save by picking it, or with a crowbar. A character that is inside a locked building can leave without removing the lock (they climb out the window).

Both door locks and padlocks may be picked. To do this, a character must have either a set of Lockpicks or the Lockpicking skill. A character with the skill may attempt to pick the lock without having picks, and a character without the skill may attempt to pick a lock if they possess lockpicks. A character with both a set of lockpicks and the lockpicking skill will have a much easier time of it.

Doors may be smashed and bashed open if they are closed, locked, padlocked (or all of the above). The character must attack the door with a weapon of some sort. Doors have 30 Hit Points and a general Damage Soak of 3 points to all types of damage (though this is modified by the type of damage; see below). No experience is awarded for damaging or destroying doors.

If the door is reduced to 0 Hit Points exactly, it is damaged, hanging on its hinges. It cannot be closed or locked. If it is reduced to fewer than 0 Hit Points, it has been destroyed and turned into kindling.

Characters with the Engineering skill may repair damaged doors or construct new doors. This grants Experience Points and (when replacing a door) a positive morality shift.

Some characters (most notably the Void Walker) may have ways of entering buildings magically, bypassing any locks on the door. Some Spells (such as Open Lock) will automatically open doors. One spell, Destroy Door, destroys doors.

[edit] Effects of Specific Weapons and Damage Types

Certain weapons are more effective versus doors while other weapons are somewhat less powerful:

  • Axes do triple damage to doors.
  • Chainsaws do triple damage.
  • Shotguns (of any type) do double damage.
  • Doors are immune to Death, Cold and Electrical damage.
  • Weapons that do Piercing damage (other than axes) do 1/3 their normal damage, rounded down (minimum 1).
  • Weapons that do Ballistic damage (other than shotguns) do 1/2 their normal damage, rounded down (minimum 1).
  • Weapons that do Holy or Unholy damage (other than shotguns) do 1/2 their normal damage, rounded down (minimum 1).
  • Weapons that deal Fire damage do double their normal damage (minimum 1).
