Factions are player-created "teams" of characters. The more powerful a faction is, the more powerful its members are, due to various bonuses granted to the faction's members based on the faction's overall karma. Note that factionless characters do receive a similar survivor bonus, although it is generally weaker than that of the average faction.
[edit] Benefits of Faction Membership
Membership within a faction carries several benefits. The most powerful are those involving combat. However, there exist other benefits to faction membership:
- Faction Mail - members of a faction are able to send in-game messages to one another easily.
- Strongholds - factions may define a Stronghold that provides a place of relative security for their members. Strongholds include a shared inventory as well as crafting stations for ammunition and Alchemy.
- Special Goodies - such as forges and medbays may be available. Faction leaders purchase such special items by spending Faction Honor at the Honor Store.
[edit] Faction Karma
A faction's Karma is a measure of its infusing power. Increasing a faction's karma increases the strength of the stronghold's Flag Shield.
A faction's karma increases by a variable number of points for every location it has infused (and thus controls), based on the faction's alignment and the location of the infusion. For a table showing infusion values, see Infusion.
The two special factions have additional karma benefits: they gain a karma bonus equal to 5% of the karma possessed by factions of similar alignment.
[edit] Faction Bonuses
If a faction has infused a square, any member of that faction will receive full bonuses when they are located on that square. The bonuses granted:
- Attack: a 5% to-hit bonus to all attack rolls they make
- Defense: a 5% bonus to their defense (chance to avoid/dodge an attack)
- Search: a 5% bonus to all search attempts they make
- Damage: 1 bonus damage to every attack they make
Bonus Limitations - The bonus a character receives is limited by their level. The maximum bonus a character can get, per category, is one half their level. In other words, a level 4 character could only receive a +2 bonus in any one category while a level 8 character could receive a bonus of +4.
Members of The Divine Army will receive partial bonuses on any square aligned to a good faction.
Members of The Infernal Horde will receive partial bonuses on any square aligned to an evil faction.
- Attack: a 3% to-hit bonus to all attack rolls they make
- Defense: a 3% bonus to their defense (chance to avoid/dodge an attack)
- Search: a 3% bonus to all search attempts they make
- Damage: no bonus granted

[edit] Faction Stronghold
Any faction can construct a Stronghold. Once a faction has a stronghold, faction Honor is tracked. Factions gain honor by capturing or helping another faction to capture the faction standard of a worthy enemy in a raid, and lose honor if done so to an unworthy opponent. Honor can also be gained by taking control of a square through Infusion.
Honor can be used to purchase stronghold additions.
[edit] Factional Alignment
Factions are given an alignment. Factional alignments are either Good, Evil, or Unaligned. Factional alignment sets restrictions upon the types of characters that are able to join the faction thusly:
- Unaligned factions may draw members who are of unaligned character classes only. Angelic and demonic characters are forbidden from joining these factions.
- Evil factions may draw members who are of unaligned character classes as well as demonic characters (those who have taken the Pariah or Defiler class). Angelic characters are forbidden from joining these factions.
- Good factions may draw members who are of unaligned character classes as well as angelic characters (those who have taken the Paladin or Shepherd class). Demonic characters are forbidden from joining these factions.
Factional alignment does not care about an individual character's Morality score; an evil character may join an unaligned faction (or even a good faction) provided that they are of an unaligned character class (Mortals, Myrmidons, Sorcerers, and their child classes).
The only exception to this rule is if the faction mode (see below) is set to aligned. If a member's alignment falls out of step with the alignment of the faction itself, they are automatically removed from the faction.
[edit] Faction Restrictions
Leaders of a faction may choose to restrict who may be a member of the faction. In any case, a restriction will reduce the number of people who are eligible to join. These restrictions can be any combination of the following: Alignment, Cult membership, Class, and/or Tier
- Aligned - Members must be of the same alignment as the faction.
- Cult - Members must be of the same cult as the faction is dedicated to.
- Class - Members must be members of the same character class (or its exits).
- Tier - Members must be of the same tier (or greater).
[edit] Faction Politics
Factions may define political stances towards other factions. This allows members of a faction to easily recognize who their faction is hostile or friendly to. Factional politics is sometimes a two way street.
The political stances are:
- Friendly - Your faction is friendly to members of this faction.
- Allied - Your faction is friendly to this faction, and they are also friendly to yours.
- Hostile - Your faction is hostile to members of this faction.
- Enemy - Your faction is hostile to this faction, and they are also hostile to yours.
- Neutral - Your faction has no political stance towards this faction.
The links to a character's name will change color depending upon the political stance of your faction to that character's faction. This is discussed in the game interface page.
[edit] Faction Ranks
All members of a faction are given a rank within the faction. Each faction has four ranks (which may be renamed). Each rank has some default permissions granted to it, though these permissions may be changed by any member of the faction with the permission to edit faction ranks.
The four default rank names and the permissions (see below) associated with them are:
- Leader - All permissions. No permissions can be removed from this rank.
- Lieutenant - Edit Ranks, Access Safe, Promote, Invite, Kick, Ban
- Sergeant - Access Safe, Invite
- Soldier - Invite
The permissions associated with a faction can be changed using the "Edit Faction" function. The character must have the "Edit Ranks" permission to do so, however.
[edit] Rank Permissions
Faction rank permissions are granted or revoked by individuals who are of sufficient rank to possess the "Edit Ranks" permission.
The permissions and the powers they grant are:
- Edit Faction - The character has the authority to change the faction's membership mode, its alignment, and its description. Further, the character has the authority to choose locations to make into a stronghold and the ability to revoke stronghold status for a location.
- Edit Ranks - The character has the authority to change the names of faction ranks and to change the permissions granted at each rank. However, the character cannot grant permissions which he himself does not possess (thus, if the character does not have the Edit Faction permission, he cannot add that permission to another rank).
- Access Safe - If the faction has a Stronghold, the character is allowed to access the stronghold safe. Without this permission, the character does not know the combination to the safe.
- Message Board - If the faction has a Stronghold, the character is allowed to change the message that is written on the message board there.
- Promote - The character has the authority to promote another character to a different rank within the faction. The character can promote someone to his own rank but not to a rank higher then that. Additionally, the character may demote other characters, but only characters who are of a rank lower than his own.
- Invite - The character has the authority to invite other characters to join the faction. This is only relevant if the faction has a closed membership policy.
- Kick - The character has the authority to kick other characters out of the faction. The character may only kick characters of lower rank than himself.
- Ban - The character has the authority to ban any character from joining the faction. If the banned character is currently a member of the faction, that character will be kicked from the faction as well (in this case, the character must be of lower rank than the character doing the banning).
[edit] Joining A Faction
Faction leaders may choose how easy it is for people to join their faction. This setting is adjustable by those with permissions in the faction. In either setting, only one character per account may be a member of the faction at a time.
- Open: Open factions allows any character to join the faction and does not require an invite.
- Closed: Entrance to this faction requires an invitation to the applicant be sent before the character can join the faction. Faction leadership may choose whether an invite can be requested or not.
[edit] Special Factions
There exist two special factions, The Divine Army and The Infernal Horde. These factions are open only to Angelic and Demonic characters, respectively, and allow multiple characters per player (this does not affect the karma of these factions).
[edit] Creating A Faction
Any character can create a faction, simply by following the Create New link in the factions page.
If the character is currently a member of a faction, he or she must leave that faction before creating a new one.
Steps for Faction Creation:
- Choose a name for your faction. This must be a unique name.
- Optionally, you may enter a website address for your faction.
- Select whether or not your faction will be "open" (anyone can join) or "closed" (requiring an invitation to join).
- Select an alignment for your faction. If you have a doubt, select "Unaligned."
- Enter an optional description for your faction. This should be a short bit of information about your faction's goals and requirements.
- Optionally, you may change the names for each rank within your faction.
- Finally, choose the default permissions for each faction rank by checking or unchecking each permission for that rank.
These settings can be changed later by anyone with Edit Faction authority.
