The map interface is broken up into several core sections. Each section serves a different purpose.

NOTE: This page describes the Classic interface, many of whose elements are also part of the Enhanced Interface rolled out in version 1.2. The current interface implemented in version 2.0 is has many differences to that written here. This page is OUT OF DATE.

[edit] The Character Box

At the top of the screen is the character box. This section displays pertinent information about the currently active character as well as some general utility information.

The information displayed is:

  • The character's name.
  • The character's Class and Level
  • The character's current Hit Point, Magic Point, and Action Point totals.
  • The character's current Morality score.
  • The character's current Experience Point total.
  • The number of characters currently active in the game and the total number of characters in existence.
  • The character's Faction, if any.
  • The character's Favor, if they are a member of a Cult.
  • A Disconnect button. Clicking this will disconnect from the character and return the user to the character selection screen.
  • If the character is dead, this will be noted here.

[edit] The Message Pane

The Message Pane
The Message Pane

The message pane appears at the top of the left hand side of the interface. It displays noticed of things that have happened to or around your character (e.g., someone has performed an action, said something, or the character has been attacked). There are many types of messages. If you are not connected, it will save all messaged until you log in and connect to your character. If you are connected, the pane will remember the 10 most recent messages.

Character names that appear in messages are clickable. Clicking on the character name will select them in the Occupants pane, or, if they are not present, you will be taken to their character profile.

The message pane also contains a text box for speaking with those in your characters location. The speak action will default to speaking to everyone present; however, you may select any character in your location and whisper to them.

Alternatively, you may use the speak box to preform an emote by beginning with either /me or /em In this way, if were to type out the text /me dances a jig - everyone else will see

  • CharacterName dances a jig

[edit] The Description Pane

The Description Pane
The Description Pane

The description pane serves to tell the player what is in his or her environment. The title bar of the description shows the name of the location the character currently inhabits. If the location has an associated neighborhood, the neighborhood will be shown as well. The neighborhood name is clickable, and will open a new window with the wiki entry corresponding to the neighborhood.

The description pane may be "shuttered" open or closed. It will remember state between page loads.

If the character is alive, it will contain a description of the current location, including the state of any doors, portals, and power grids. It will also indicate the number of corpses present (if any).

[edit] The Actions Pane

The Actions Pane
The Actions Pane

The actions pane is the primary mechanism for characters to interact with the game.

The actions pane is split up into several discrete groupings of actions. Each action grouping can be "shuttered" open or closed and will remember its state between page loads.

The groupings are, in the order they appear:

  • Door and Portal Actions - Actions pertaining to entering or exiting locations, sewer grates, and portals. This includes special movement powers, such as The Stepping of the Corner.
  • Combat Actions - Actions pertaining to attacking Wards, or Barricades. Additionally, Area of Effect combat skills (such as Earthquake or Explosive Murder) appear here as well.
  • Basic Actions - Miscellaneous actions, such as Search, and Hide.
  • Spells - Spell actions. This grouping only appears if the character knows how to cast Spells.
  • Skills - Skill actions, such as Infuse, Surgery, or Meditation.
  • Eye of Death - This grouping is only available to Nexus Champion characters who possess the Tattoo of the Eye of Death skill. It gives them additional details about corpses in the area.
  • Clothing Designer - The Mall's clothing creation system.
  • Enchanting - The system for enchanting armor, weapons, and items.
  • Alchemy Workbench - The system for creating potions with Alchemy.
  • Crafting and Repairing - The system for crafting and repairing items.
  • Engineering - All Engineering actions, including crafting ammunition.
  • Pets - Pet summoning actions (note that pet command actions are handled with the Pets tab, explained below).
  • Stronghold Actions - Access to Stronghold safes and (if the character has sufficient permissions) the actions to create or remove a stronghold.

Not all groupings will be visible. For example, if there are no other characters in a location, then the Combat Actions will not be visible. Likewise, if the character does not possess the skills Alchemy or Engineering, neither of those groupings will appear. Further, there may be additional criteria which affect a pane's appearance (for example, the Clothing Designer grouping will only appear when the character is inside of a Mall).

Action elements themselves may appear as "greyed-out" or disabled. If this is the case, one or more criteria required for the action's use is not available (such as insufficient Action Points or Magic Points).

[edit] The Map

The map pane is the primary mechanism for characters to move throughout the game world. It consists of a 5x5 grid, with each slot on the grid corresponding to the a location near the character. The center point is always the character's current location.

At the top of the map is listed the name of the location. Often, this will be something generic, like "House", but many locations have specific names associated with them. Hovering the mouse over nearby locations will replace this with information about that area. The location's X and Y co-ordinates are shown here as well.

An icon that represents a gauge as to the number of characters in the location will show people and pets around you.

The Multifunction Pane's Map Tab
The Multifunction Pane's Map Tab

Image:Occupants-single.gif means a single other character. A greater number of it found in a location means that more characters are in that location.

Image:Pets-single.gif means a single pet. A greater number of it found in a location means that more pets are in that location.

Along the top edge of the square may sometimes appear several stacked "metadata" icons. These icons will be used to denote special information about the location that will be of use to the player. By far, the most common icons will be icons that represent the type of location (such as Image:Icon-firestation.gif indicating a Fire Station).

The types of icons that can appear are:

  • Location type specific icons (Image:Icon-firestation.gif, etc.)
  • Whether or not a ward exists (See ward for more information)
  • Whether or not the location is also a Stronghold (Image:Stronghold-icon.gif)
  • Whether or not the location contains a Sewer grate (Image:Portal-sewer.gif)
  • Whether or not the location contains a Ferry (Image:Portal-ferry.gif)
  • Whether or not the location contains a Portal (Image:Portal-standingstones.gif, Image:Portal-obelisk.gif, or Image:Portal-swirlingcolors.gif)

Additionally, if the character has the skill Psychometry, he will be able to see icons that indicate whether or not the location has been Infused. There are five icons that can appear:

  • The location has been infused by your faction (Image:OwnFaction.gif)
  • The location has been infused by a Good faction (Image:Infusion-Good.gif)
  • The location has been infused by an Evil faction (Image:Infusion-Evil.gif)
  • The location has been infused by The Divine Army (Image:Infusion-DA.gif)
  • The location has been infused by The Infernal Horde (Image:Infusion-IH.gif)
  • The location has been infused by any other Faction (Image:Infusion-neutral.gif)

Hovering your mouse over an adjacent location will produce an arrow button. Clicking this button will move the character to that location (at a cost of 1 or more Action Points). If the button is a gray X or does not appear, then the character is unable to move to that location for some reason (such as not having the right skill, or being blocked by a Barricade).

[edit] The Multifunction Pane

The multifunction pane, as its name implies, serves several purposes. The pane contains several tabs. Clicking on any one of these tabs will switch focus to that tab, allowing the player access to the information or actions contained within.

The multifunction pane will remember which tab is currently displayed between page loads, and can be closed in the top-right corner by clicking the Image:Tab-close-button.JPG

[edit] The Inventory Tab

The Multifunction Pane's Inventory Tab
The Multifunction Pane's Inventory Tab

Clicking on the "Inventory" tab at the top of the multifunction pane will display the character's inventory. This is organized alphabetically and in some cases items will be "stacked".

This is a table that displays the name of the item, the number of the items present (if stackable), the total weight of all items in the line, and up to two action buttons.

The action buttons available depend on the item in question:

  • Drop - All items will have this button. This drops the item at no AP cost. The item is lost forever.
  • Use - Many items may be used. The actual effect of this button depends on the item in question.
  • Drink - Various Potions must be consumed in order for one to receive their magical effects.
  • Reload - Available only on certain weapons, this will reload the weapon if the character has a clip of the corresponding ammunition.
  • Unload - Available only on certain weapons, this will unload the weapon. Several weapons must be completely unloaded before reloading.
  • Learn - in the case of a Spell, the character may learn the spell (assuming that he or she has sufficient Character Points)
  • Equip - This equips clothing, jewelry, or armor. Each item that can be equipped will list what part of your character's body you will equip it to. Some items will prevent other items from being equipped. Foe example, you may not wear more than one shirt.
  • Unequip - This unequips clothing, jewelry, or armor that is equipped.

Next to each item's name is an "info" link. Clicking on this will display additional information about the item in question.

At the bottom of the inventory pane is listed the total weight carried.

[edit] The Target Pane

The Multifunction Pane's Target Tab
The Multifunction Pane's Target Tab

This pane displays the information about the selected target character. If no character is currently selected, a message indicating such is displayed.

There is a pull down that lists all occupants in the area. Selecting any character will load the character's details into the target pane. Likewise, selecting a character from one of the action pull downs (such as the attack pull down) or clicking on a character's name will populate that character's details in the pane.

If a character is selected, the following information will be displayed in the target pane:

  • The target's name
  • The target's class and level
  • The target's faction, if any
  • The target's alignment, if the active character has the skill Sense Morality
  • The target's total kills and total deaths
  • The target's physical description, generated from the items and clothing they have equipped
  • The target's personal description, as entered by the player
  • The target's Badges
  • The target's current Hit Point total, if the active character has the skill First Aid and is in the same location.
  • The target's current Magic Point total, if the active character has the skill Sense Magic and is in the same location.
  • The target's current Morality score, if the active character has the skill Sense Morality and is in the same location.

An expandable link, "Skills," can be opened to display the skills possessed by the target.

Further, a link to the target's full profile page exists (as a link, "View Profile").

If the active character is in a Faction and has the authority to invite others to the faction, a button will appear to allow the character to invite the target character to the faction.

Clicking this button will open a small form where the player can enter a short subject and message to the target character for use in the faction invite.

[edit] The Scratchpad Pane

The Multifunction Pane's Scratchpad Tab
The Multifunction Pane's Scratchpad Tab

All characters have access to a personal "scratchpad." This is simply a text entry field that allows them to add notes about things they have done, places they have been, kill lists, recipes - whatever.

Simply enter the text you wish to be saved into the text entry field and click "Save Scratchpad."

Scratchpads are per-character. No other character has access to this information. The scrachpad text is only visible from the map interface.

[edit] The Spellbook Pane

The Multifunction Pane's Spellbook Tab
The Multifunction Pane's Spellbook Tab

The spellbook pane lists information about all of the Spells that the character has learned. The spellbook pane will only appear if the character has the skill Cast Spell.

Each spell known is listed, along with the following information about the spell:

  • Spell - The name of the spell.
  • Category - The spell's overall type (e.g., defensive, Area of Effect, offensive, location, etc.)
  • MP - The number of Magic Points required to cast the spell.
  • Dmg - If the spell is a combat spell, this is the number of points of damage it will do (or, in the case of an Area of Effect spell, the per-character damage maximum).
  • Max Dmg - If the spell is an Area of Effect spell, this is the maximum number of points the spell will deal per casting according to the AOE mechanics.
  • Dmg Type - If the spell is a combat spell, this is the type of Damage the spell will deal, used mostly for calculating soak in the overall damage.

Additionally, there is a link next to each spell's name, "(info)". When clicked, an area will expand beneath the spell name that provides the spell's description.

[edit] The Pets Pane

The Multifunction Pane's Pets Tab
The Multifunction Pane's Pets Tab

The pets pane allows characters with the ability to summon and control Pets to command the creatures they have summoned.

Each summoned pet will have a line in the table here, along with the following information:

  • Pet - The name and type of the pet. If the pet has been given a nickname, the nickname will be displayed with the pet's type in parenthesis. Otherwise, only the pet's type will be displayed.
  • HP - The pet's current Hit Point total.
  • MP - The pet's current Magic Point total.
  • AP - The pet's current Action Point total.

Additionally, there will be a link, "(commands)", which, when clicked, will cause a small panel to appear beneath the pet's entry in the table. In this area will be several small actions:

  • Rejuvenate - Clicking this will re-invigorate the pet, bringing it back to full Magic Points, Hit Points, and Action Points. This is effectively the same as "re-summoning" the pet, and is extremely useful for Liches, who must have a supply of Corpses to use.
  • Dismiss - Dispels the pet.
  • Command - This sets the pet's activity mode (Passive, Aggressive, Defensive, Aggressive to Hostiles, or Aggressive to Enemies)
  • Set Nickname - This will enable the pet master to give a "nickname" to the pet.

Below the list of all pets there are two special functions that operate on all pets that the character has summoned. One will set the activity mode for all pets and the other will dismiss all pets.
