Necrotic Tower
From NexusWiki
The Necrotic Tower is the largest structure that exists within the unaligned plane of Purgatorio. The Necrotic Tower was built in the deep reaches of time by the lich, Haldos. It was here that he developed and perfected his mastery over death itself - and it was here, too, that he met his final doom.
The "tower" itself is surrounded by (and connected to) a circular outer wall that is also considered to be part of the Necrotic Tower proper. It is constructed entirely of fused bone that has been magically treated to be stronger than stone and steel. Inside the wall is a "courtyard moat" that was once used to house the undead soldiers in the service of Haldos (eventually, the size of the undead army grew too large for the courtyard itself and began to fill the surrounding rock, and then nearby islands).
The fate of the Necrotic Tower is tied to the fate of Haldos himself. Stories say the uberlich challenged the Elder Power of death, Hashaa, in a bid to take her place. The challenge failed, and Hashaa's power devastated the soldiers of Haldos in the form of a magnificent fire storm. In the blink of an eye, thousands upon thousands of zombies, ghouls, and skeletons were stripped of undeath to fall inert where they stood.
Over time, these corpses would decay where they lay, and the area would degenerate into the great ossuary pits of Purgatorio. Further, the surrounding land for a great distance was blighted and cursed forever: nothing would ever take root in the charred and burnt land there.
Some believe the spirit of Haldos still haunts the Necrotic Tower. After all, the lich had discovered the path beyond death and possessed power to rival the Elder Powers. Still others say that the master of undeath was undone by his own lust for power.
