Pie Day

Pie Day is a national holiday in St. Germaine that occurs on the fourth Thursday of November.

Pie Day was declared a national holiday in the islands in 1933 by Rudolphus II. This was partially in response to the Great Depression taking place in the United States, as the economic downturn there resulted in hard times for the island nation since their tobacco crops were failing to sell as well as they had been.

Because of this many tobacco farmers began planting fruits and vegetables in their fields: if they couldn't sell cigars to the States, they could at least sell apples in the islands. This worked out well - so well that the crop of 1933 produced too many apples and the fruit was in danger of rotting in storage. This drove the price of apples down and the government stepped in and bought them all - entire crops - and distributed the food to the peoples of the islands for free.

So the citizenry went about using apples in everything - especially pies. In November of 1933 the King-Regent decided that St. Germaine was truly indebted to the crops of apples which helped stave off starvation. Since the American holiday of "Thanksgiving" was only dimly celebrated by the islanders (and then only by American expatriots), Rudolphus declared that the fourth Thursday of November be henceforth known as "Pie Day" in remembrance of the great apple bounty of 1933.
