Portals connect the planes and provide a way of travelling between them. It is thought they were created by the Elder Powers, but how and for what purpose is completely unknown.

Portals link a single departure point to a single destination point; any given portal transports to only a single destination. For instance, Portal A and portal B are tied together. Portal A only goes to portal B, and portal B only leads to portal A. Portal A cannot be used to travel to portal C, and portal B is not a destination for any portal other than A.

There are portals spread throughout Valhalla, Sewers, Paradise, Nimbus, Stygia, Warrens, Purgatorio, and Nifleheim. Not all planes are connected to each other plane. For example: Valhalla has no direct connections to Nimbus, the Warrens, or Nifleheim. Some planes have more connections than others, and some connections are more often used than others. Valhalla, Purgatorio, and Nifleheim contain portals that connect areas of the same plane.

Portals can appear as obelisks, standing stones, beanstalks, ferries, sewer grates, caves, train stations and miasmas/swirling gates.

In addition to these general-use portals, there are invisible portals usable only by cultists of Goros which cost HP to use.

The Nexus War Uber Map is a more detailed, graphic map which details portal locations, destinations, and costs of use.

Ward spells cannot be cast at locations with portals.

[edit] Using portals

Portals available to use are listed on the "Door and Portal Actions" section of the game interface.

Using a portal costs a variable amount of Magic Points (MP), Action Points (AP), and/or Hit Points (HP). Most portals take 8 to 10 MP to activate, although there are many that cost more or less. In particular, the portals that connect different sections of Purgatorio often take only 5 MP per use.

Characters will see portals listed as obelisks, standing stones, or a swirling miasma of colour without an indication of their destination or the MP/AP/HP cost. Characters with the Sense Magic skill have the portal's destination listed with the associated costs, such as "Enter Standing Stones to Poco Maquez (10 MP)".
