A Map of Purgatorio
A Map of Purgatorio

Purgatorio is the formal name for the plane of existence populated by all things neutral and unaligned, focused on free will.

Like its ethical alignment, Purgatorio is a fragmented land, consisting of hundreds of small (and large) rocky land-masses floating within an endless void of nothingness. Some of these islands are connected to one another by giant iron chains, which serve the dual purpose of keeping the islands from floating apart and providing a method of travel between them (for those who do not possess the ability to fly).

Purgatorio is an extremely large plane - easily twice the size of the Saint Germaine Archipelago - and "medium" sized land areas there can be the equivalent of "large" islands in the archipelago.

[edit] Travelling in Purgatorio

Travel through Purgatorio is best accomplished through the use of various flight powers. However, several portals exist within the plane, linking disparate areas to one another. Further, many sections are connected by giant chains which can be traversed as if they were bridges.

Movement in Purgatorio is done freely and does not cause damage to anyone, regardless of alignment, although normal Action Point costs apply.

[edit] Features in Purgatorio

The primary terrain types of Purgatorio are Void, Chain, and Rock. However, virtually any other type of terrain may be found within the plane, as it is extremely large.

[edit] The Isle of Gates

The Isle of Gates is an island floating towards the center of the plane and was apparently used as a nexus for travelling throughout the immense territories of the plane (and, indeed, between planes). Whatever buildings were once there have long fallen to ruin, but the gates remain.

[edit] The Necrotic Tower

The Necrotic Tower is the largest structure in the plane and is constructed entirely of fused bone. It was once the abode of the uberlich, Haldos, and was the primary base of his operations.

The Necrotic Tower and the surrounding area were the focus of an immense firestorm unleashed by Hashaa. Though everything in the vicinity was burned, the tower itself was unharmed.

[edit] The Ossuary Pits

The Ossuary Pits are huge swaths of land that surround the Necrotic Tower that are comprised of a deep layer of bone. These bones are the age-old remains of the undead army of Haldos, destroyed by the Elder Power of death, Hashaa.

[edit] The Witch's Waste and the Tower of the Sand Witch

The immense region known as the Witch's Waste is a dry, featureless desert so named for its sole structure: the Tower of the Sand Witch. The tower was made long after the construction of the Necrotic Tower, and is thus a fairly recent addition to the plane, but it is still thousands of years old.

The tower was the abode of the notorious Witch of Galmath, whose powers were said to focus on the manipulation of the elements. Of the fate of the Witch, nothing is written. However, travellers still claim to encounter Harzath, a giant, immortal troll who was enslaved to the Witch of Galmath.

[edit] The Caldera Sea

The Caldera Sea is an immense body of water floating inside of what amounts to a giant bowl of rock. At some point in the history of Purgatorio, there was a thriving city on an island in the center of the sea. However, a volcano erupting on the island destroyed it, and all that remains are a few scattered ruins.

[edit] The Forgotten City

To the extreme southeast of the plane are four islands known as the Forgotten City. These four islands were once connected but over time have sundered and drifted apart. Their only link now is the chains that bind them together.

The age of the Forgotten City is difficult to calculate. It is known to have existed during the time of Haldos, but was empty even then. Many believe it is the remains of a previous battleground, saved for all eternity, and long forgotten.

[edit] Marrakun, The Village of the Damned

To the southeast of the Necrotic Tower lie several islands collectively (and colloquially) known as Marrakun or the Village of the Damned. It is an empty place and was once ruled by the Prince Marrakun, whose iron fortress, Marrakun-Ahk, casts its shadow over the area.

[edit] Cromahl-Hult

To the far west lie several jungle islands that were once the center of the great Empire of Cromahl-Hult. These are some of the eldest islands in the plane of Purgatorio.
