The Guide to Selecting a Faction
From NexusWiki
So you’ve heard about these Faction things and are thinking about joining one. Smart move, not only are factions a source of bonuses, relative safety, and equipment, but being in a faction can make the game a lot more fun.

[edit] So what’s the best faction to join?
There isn’t an outright best faction to join. The best faction for you will be the one you have the most fun in. Check out the Recruitment board and also the blurbs for each faction in the factions tab in the interface. You may wind up trying out a number of factions before you find one that you’ll want to stick with.
[edit] That’s a freaking lot of factions! How do I narrow it down?
Well you can decide what you most want out of a faction. To find out things like how well they roleplay or whether they crusade you'll just have to go through the listings or try them out. For some other things that are listed below you can narrow your selection down based on the info in the faction tab.
[edit] I want a faction bonus!
Alright so you’re interested in crafting things for a fraction of the cost or doing eight points of damage when you swing your axe instead of five.
The way bonuses work currently is that you get faction bonuses only on tiles infused to your faction. Thus, if you are a crafter who stays mainly in the stronghold, just about any faction located in a factory or with a forge upgrade will do. If you want a bonus in searching and reading books, look for a powerful faction located near a library.
[edit] I want to be safe!
Every stronghold in the game has been/will be raided at some point. So you’re never 100% safe. Pacifistic factions tend to get raided less than warlike ones, though.
As a rule of thumb, for equally aggressive factions, the larger factions will tend to get raided less frequently, and your odds of getting killed in a raid are lower.
[edit] I want equipment/supplies!
You also can’t be 100% sure of that sort of thing from just looking at the faction lists, but larger factions tend to have larger safes, more searchers, crafters, and enchanters, and just more of everything to share. Also you might want to check how close factions are to the resource buildings you may need such as gun shops (G), pharmacies (P) and hospitals (H) as well as factories.
[edit] I want to be important/make a difference!
Well through your efforts on their forums and in the game you can come to prominence in any faction. However your arrival will obviously have more impact on smaller and mid-sized factions than larger ones. For quite small factions, you might make a critical difference in the faction's success.
[edit] What do I do once I join a faction?
Well you can do whatever you want, however I’d advise you to join their forums (usually found by clicking on their home page link or chalked up on their stronghold message board) and going to the faction's stronghold to say hi in person. Some factions won't promote you to be able to use their safe unless you show up in the stronghold or sign up on their forums; some have other requirements like taking part in a raid. It's always good to introduce yourself and ask about the rules/expectations of a new faction you've joined.
