Jonas Ridley, Notable Recluse, Dies

By Amanda Marcus

All of Saint Germaine is in mourning today as noted citizen Jonas Ridley, formerly of the British empire, was found dead yesterday of an apparent heart attack. He was ninety-eight.

Lord Ridley (his proper title) first came to the Saint Germaine archipelago in 1878 under mysterious circumstances. He purchased the whole of Ridley Island at the time and built his famous "Ridley House" there, where he lived until his death. Ridley was well-known throughout the archipelago, despite his sometimes eccentric behavior. He was well-regarded as a philanthropist within the Principality, donating large sums of money for public works projects and the Crown owes him a debt that can never be repaid.

Funeral services are to be held Sunday on Ridley Island, where his body shall be interred. Lord Ridley has no kin to speak of; however, his will left instructions that donations to charity be made in lieu of flowers.

5 Dead, 10 Injured, More Feared Dead As Hurricane Trevor Washes Over Liana Island

By John Ferrie

Police and rescue workers worked around the clock yesterday attempting to save several construction workers on Liana Island in the wake of Hurricane Trevor. Ten workers were found alive but injured, and five bodies were pulled from the wreckage of a new Callihan's resort being constructed on the east shore of the island.

However, government officials indicated that they believed the death toll to be much higher, citing work records that showed at least five more individuals were supposed to be on-site at the time the hurricane made landfall.

"This is just unbelievable," said Minister Raines, surveying the destruction. "In all my years of service on the islands, I've never seen anything like this before." The destruction wrought by Hurricane Trevor on the Callihan's facility was total; those workers found alive survived only by taking shelter within the deepest sub-basement of the hotel. Above ground, nothing remains save small bits of wood and bent steel.

A spokesperson for Callihan's was unable to be reached for comment.

Hurricane Melissa Approaches; Govt. Declares Martial Law

By Philipe Gaston

Hurricane Melissa threatens the archipelago with total destruction and martial law has been declared over the entirety of the Saint Germaine Principality as of two o'clock in the afternoon yesterday, according to Jacques Dupries, Minister of the Interior.

The hurricane, recently upgraded to category five, is expected to hit the islands tomorrow afternoon. All citizens of the Saint Germaine Principality are ordered to seek shelter indoors, preferably on the western edges of the islands. Minister Dupries has said that, if possible, people should make their way towards Hayden Stadium or Hammerstrom Airport, indicating that both buildings are expected to be able to ride out the hurricane relatively unscathed.

When pressed about the necessity of declaring martial law, the Minister had this to say, "It is for the protection of the peoples of Saint Germaine. The military is better equipped to handle an emergency of this nature. We have already begun to set up supply lines and prepare facilities for the treatment of the injured."

San Cristobol Prison Officially Closed

By John Ferrie

Nearly a century after construction began, the venerable San Cristobol prison, a building of some controversy, was officially closed yesterday.

Construction began on San Cristobol in 1895 after the first Democratic Uprising in order to house political dissidents and was officially completed in 1901. The prison stood almost unnoticed for half a century until 1946, when King-Regent Rudolphus III poured huge sums of money into its renovation, turning it into a state-of-the-art penitentiary. At the time, this was a controversial decision, especially in the wake of World War II.

However, in 1964 documents came to light that indicated the financial backer of the prison's construction was none other than the United States government, who apparently used the facility to hold several high-profile prisoners of war. This sparked an international investigation at the time and led to allegations of torture and corruption within the Saint Germaine Crown, and is often cited as one of the primary reasons behind the second Democratic Uprising.

Government officials had no comment on future plans for the real estate, saying that it would remain closed until "a suitable idea came around."

San Cristobol Prison Re-Opened After Modifications Completed

By Amanda Marcus

The newly rebuilt San Christobol prison was re-opened today in a ceremony attended by King-Regent Rudolophus III. The prison, which was closed for reconstruction late last year, is now said to be a state-of-the-art penitentiary. This is a controversial move by the King-Regent, as many point to the amount of money spent on the prison as being unnecessary given the low population of criminals housed within.

Voodoo Priest "Papa" Duvalier, Cultists, Slain In San Cristobol Shoot-Out

By Marie Pinochet

A seven day standoff between the Saint Germaine military and the "Skull Cult" of noted voodoo priest "Papa" Duvalier ended late last night in bloodshed at the former San Cristobol prison.

Late last week the Skull Cult claimed the prison as its own, claiming that it had been built upon the gravesite of former African slaves. In a videotaped message delivered to KSGA, "Papa" Duvalier claimed that the island prison was now the property of the Skull Cult and that it was a sovereign nation, declaring that any invasion attempts would be repelled by force. This act touched off a round-the-clock standoff, as military and police personnel surrounded the prison.

According to eyewitnesses, around ten o'clock PM several gunshots were heard from inside the walls of the prison. Shortly thereafter, Duvalier appeared atop the wall, shouting at the police below. He then opened fire on the police with a small caliber pistol. This prompted an immediate reprisal and Saint Germaine police stormed the prison.

Saint Germaine officials had no comment by press-time.
